FBI Investigates Merriam Connection To Tiller Murder

Kansas City, KS – Charges are expected to be filed Monday in the shooting death of late-term abortion provider Doctor George Tiller. Scott Roeder was arrested in Johnson County, Kansas and was expected to be taken to Wichita for questioning in the investigation. Members of an FBI task force hovered around a Merriam house Sunday night believed to be connected to Roeder. KCUR's Dan Verbeck reports.

As many as five agents were around the house in the 50 hundred block of Knox. Early on agents had interviewed others who lived in the split ranch house. It is a very private setting with a six foot tall wood fence around a shaded back yard. This neighbor, who asks we not identify him, said the house had revolving occupants who lived with the owner.

Neighbor: "Never met him. I've seen him, I guess, come and go but never actually met him, no."
Dan Verbeck: "There are a number of people who live in that house?"
Neighbor: "At different times, yes."

Sarah Mendez had her 5-month-old son in a baby stroller going past the house. She was unaware of the law enforcement interest, at first.

Mendez: "That is really surprising. And really scary."

Neighbors we talked with never had an extended conversation with house occupants, never a mention of a controversial subject.
