Kansas City, Mo. – A University of Missouri-Kansas City student is charged in the murder of a Kansas City businessman at his Country Club District home.

Matthew Hendrix is charged with second-degree murder, burglary and armed criminal action. Police list his address as Oak Street Hall dormitory at 50th and Oak, less than a mile from the murder scene. Hendrix is 17.

49-year-old Michael Tutera was shot to death inside his home in the gated community of Sunset Drive, just south of Ward Parkway.

Court documents say Tutera had called police the day before the Thursday shooting to complain Hendrix was trespassing. Police say Hendrix admitted being with other men planning to rob Tutera. He said that when he returned to the house and he was outside, he heard two shots. The police account has Hendrix and the others fleeing and gathering a short time later in nearby Loose Park.

Hendrix's bond is recommended by the Jackson County Prosecutor at $250,000, cash only.
