Kansas City, MO – The driver of a stolen pickup truck traveled miles between Raytown and midtown Kansas City in the wrong-way lanes of two major highways this afternoon. The multi car wreck that ended it put six people in hospitals and snarled traffic for hours.

Score upon score of drivers stacked up on 71 Highway both sides of 55th Street had no idea an escape from a police snare had started what ended in the destruction. They were just stuck in traffic and being detoured.

Officer Darin Snapp said undercover detectives had tried to arrest a career car burglar in a Raytown store parking lot. He sped off in a stolen truck and, "the helicopter began following the individual who continued driving the wrong way on 350 Highway into Kansas City. And as he approached 71 Highway, he went the wrong way on 71 Highway."

The escaping driver rammed a succession of cars. Five occupants of cars that happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time were hospitalized, the man police were chasing, the most seriously hurt with what police say is a broken femur and multiple lower body injuries.
