Recent controversy tied to the Washington Redskins’ name is revitalizing a longtime debate about the name of Kansas City’s professional football team, too.
Last week, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office revoked the trademark of the NFL’s Washington Redskins. This came after five Native Americans claimed the name disparages them.
The case’s media attention has shined a light on other professional sports teams with American Indian name origins, such as the Atlanta Braves, the Cleveland Indians, the Chicago Blackhawks — and the Kansas City Chiefs.
In October, the National Congress of American Indians accused the Chiefs and the other teams of continuing“to profit from harmful stereotypes originated during a time when white superiority and segregation were common place.”
