Gamble Loss-Limit Lifters Begin Attack

Kansas City, Mo. – Opponents to the Missouri Casino initiative, Proposition A have started their drive. Most people think the measure on next month's ballot would only take away the limits on gambling losses. But Evelio Silvera of the group calling itself Casino Watch committee says it would also make it harder to identify those banned from gambling, often underworld figures or unsavory characters. Still, it's the loss limit that strikes a chord. Some fear new Kansas casinost that are going to be built will take away Missouri business and jobs. But Missouri has never had a loss year for casinos, Says Silvera. In his words,
sometimes (some years they have) double digit percentage increases. They outperform casinos in neighboring states that haven't have and don't have loss limits
So Silvera says job loss is a red herring.
Asked the campaign budget, Silvera says it relies on ten and twenty five dollar donations. The budget for advertising is less than a hundred thousand dollars. He likens the battle against the gaming industry lobbying for Proposition A, "a David and Goliath contest."
