Kansas City Star Layoffs Highlight Industry's Struggles

Kansas City, MO – Two weeks ago, The Kansas City Star laid off about 50 workers. This was the latest of several rounds of cuts and buyouts, totaling about 200 jobs. Dozens of those cuts have been in the newsroom, and many were journalists who have reported in Kansas City for decades. That leaves readers wondering how much the crisis in the newspaper industry will affect the amount and quality of news they read every day in the Kansas City Star. KCUR's Sylvia Maria Gross recently asked that question to former Kansas City Star managing editor Monroe Dodd, retired KU journalism professor Rick Musser, Star cartoonist Lee Judge and former political reporter Kit Wagar.
