Parents React To Proposed School Consolidations

Kansas City, MO – About a hundred and fifty people packed a meeting room at the Kansas City Missouri School District headquarters last week. Many came to protest the closing of about a dozen schools. KCUR's Sylvia Maria Gross was there.

School officials presented a slightly different plan from the one that was discussed at budget workshops the previous week. Now, eleven schools are slated to close. Most of the parents at the meeting were there to defend Longan, a French magnet school in Hyde Park.

Many parents also came out to defend McCoy Elementary, which is one of the district's few schools that's meeting federal standards. Officials say they are looking at demographic trends, academic performance and building conditions as they recommend which buildings should be closed. A final decision is expected at the school board meeting this Wednesday.
