Sumner HS Remembered in New Book Written By Alumni

Last weekend, graduates of Sumner High School gathered in Kansas City, Kansas to remember the stories and history of a pretty unique school. High schools in Kansas City, Kansas were actually somewhat integrated before 1905, when violent incidents between students led the district to segregate schools based on race. The black high school started as a technical school, but members of the black community lobbied to change it into an academic high school named after US Senator Charles Sumner, an abolitionist. Sumner evolved into a college preparatory school with a reputation for excellence. This story is told in a new book, The Sumner Story.

Susan B. Wilson
A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Susan admits that her “first love” was radio, being an avid listener since childhood. However, she spent much of her career in mental health, healthcare administration, and sports psychology (Susan holds a PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and an MBA from the Bloch School of Business at UMKC.) In the meantime, Wilson satisfied her journalistic cravings by doing public speaking, providing “expert” interviews for local television, and being a guest commentator/contributor to KPRS’s morning drive time show and the teen talk show “Generation Rap.”
