Kansas School Funding Boost Put On Hold By State High Court

The Kansas Supreme Court today has put on hold a decision from a district court that ordered Kansas lawmakers to hike spending on public schools.

Justices also ordered mediation in an education funding lawsuit.

Governor Sam Brownback had requested the mediation and was joined in it by Attorney General Derek Schmidt.

The high court decisions arrived in a pair of single-page orders today.

The case comes from a lawsuit filed in 2010 by several school districts and parents of some public school students.

In January, a panel of judges sitting in District Court at Topeka  directed legislators to increase annual spending on schools by a minimum of $440 million. The panel had found the state does not meet its constitutional obligation to pay for public education.

The Kansas Supreme Court stays the district court ruling until the high court can rule in the whole case.
