General Assignment Reporter – KCUR - #72673

THE OPPORTUNITY

KCUR 89.3 is hiring a general assignment reporter with strong visual journalism skills to be an integral part of our growing newsroom.  This is a great opportunity for an ambitious, flexible self-starter who wants to develop their journalism skills in a vibrant Midwest city.

This reporter will brainstorm, research, photograph, record and report spot news and long-form, NPR-standard features on issues in the region; create web and social content to accompany radio stories; participate in community engagement efforts; and appear as a guest on talk shows as needed.

We’re looking for someone who can help us improve our visual storytelling for digital and social platforms – through their own work and by coaching others - while also producing audio spots for our newscasts.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

  • Identifies, researches, pitches, photographs, video records and writes on a wide variety of topics.
  • Contributes regular content to KCUR’s newscasts, website and social media platforms, including photos, video, audio and text.
  • Anticipates and responds to breaking news.
  • Collaborates with and coaches other KCUR reporters and editors on visual storytelling.
  • Participates in all assigned fund-raising and outreach activities, on air and off.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

An Associate’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, marketing, communications or a related field; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job. 
  • Two years of work experience in a public media or news organization.
  • Ability to cover breaking news and enterprise through innovative visual storytelling.
  • Aggressive, enthusiastic, and self-motivated approach to daily news coverage.
  • Excellent writing skills, proven news judgment, and journalistic integrity.
  • Enthusiasm for the role of public media in a changing journalism environment.
  • Ability to multitask and work on diverse projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to take direction and work collaboratively with various personalities.
  • Ability and willingness to work a varied schedule.
  • Experience operating a variety of broadcast equipment including audio boards, digital editing systems (e.g. Adobe Audition), field recording units, and other production equipment.
  • Experience producing content for the web and social platforms.

SUPERVISION

This position reports to KCUR’s News Director.

SALARY

This position is non-exempt and full-time.  Salary starts at $19.47 an hour, equaling $40,498 annually, and will be commensurate with experience and education.
