Kansas City, KS – The Environmental Protection Agency accuses MoDOT of failing to protect streams along two highway construction jobs. Inspectors allegedly found sediment was allowed to seep into a half dozen creeks and unnamed tributaries in Camden and Wayne Counties in central Missouri.
The waterways flow into Lake of the Ozarks.
Chris Whitley of Region 7 of EPA in Kansas City, Kansas says MoDOT is being told to honor terms of stormwater permits--"There is the possibility, and we're going to study more of the circumstances that are surrounding these violations, there is the possibility that EPA could bring civil monetary penalties against MoDOT, depending on how things go."
The purported violations of runoff control rules were discovered in June and July inspections of highway construction on U.S. Highways 54 and 67 in mid Missouri.
