KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Relying on animal welfare groups to persuade more people to license their pets, the latest plan for the Kansas City animal shelter would draw only $70,000 from the city's emergency fund.
Finance chair Jan Marcason, who opposed a plan that would have tapped the fund for $285,000, called it a very good solution. It meets both the goals of financial responsibility and appropriate management of the facility, Marcason said.
If the council approves the revised plan, the city will execute a contract to pay nonprofit KC Pet Partners $340,000 to start providing some services at the animal shelter. Pet Partners would thenfully take over its operation on January 1, 2912.
Another council committee also endorsed several city planning proposals. They incldued a Rockhurst University expansion, new development in the 18th and Vine district and purchasing the drag strip in the Little Blue Valley for conversion into a city park.
