Harvest Public Media to expand environmental coverage as Report for America host

Report For America

The program will provide Harvest with a corps reporter dedicated to environmental coverage as part of the Mississippi River Basin Ag & Water Desk.

Harvest Public Media has been selected as one of nearly 70 newsroom partners to host a Report For America corps member beginning in summer 2022. The program will provide Harvest with a corps reporter dedicated to environmental coverage as part of the Mississippi River Basin Ag & Water Desk.

Headquartered at KCUR 89.3, Harvest Public Media is a collaborative network of reporters and partner stations throughout the Midwest and Plains. The Mississippi River Basin Ag & Water Desk is a collaborative based at the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

“This dedicated environmental reporter will further strengthen Harvest’s journalism,” says Scott Canon, interim editor for Harvest Public Media. “We’ll have a reporter who can look across the Mississippi River Basin for stories that matter to the audience in our region."

Report For America is a national service program that places journalists into local newsrooms to report on under-covered issues and communities. An initiative of The GroundTruth Project, a nonprofit media organization, it is structured to harness the skills and idealism of an emerging group of talented journalists plus the creative spirit of local news organizations — like those of the Harvest Public Media collaborative.

Corps members will be selected from a highly-competitive, national competition. Journalists interested in this position can apply here by Jan. 31, 2022.

“Report for America provides a unique opportunity for journalists to pursue meaningful, local beat reporting that sadly is missing from many of today’s newsrooms,” said Earl Johnson, director of admissions at Report for America. “Beyond talented reporters and photojournalists, we are looking for a diversity of individuals who see journalism as a calling, who want to make a difference within their communities.”
