Internships at KCUR 89.3 and 91.9 Classical KC
KCUR's internships are designed to prepare college students, recent graduates and other qualified candidates for careers in public media in general and KCUR in particular. We seek talented applicants from across the spectrum of diversity. You'll find more information about specific internships below.
KCUR offers paid full- and part-time internships during the summer, fall and winter/spring semesters. Internships pay $11 per hour, and interns may receive academic credit if an agreement is made between KCUR and the intern's college or university. Internships are temporary positions through the University of Missouri-Kansas City and are therefore subject to a background check.
- Summer program: March 15
- Fall semester program: July 15
- Winter/spring semester program: November 15
Preferred candidates are journalism/mass communications graduate or undergraduate students or those who have recently graduated from college. Familiarity with public radio required.
The following is a list of internship positions available at KCUR and Classical KC. On the application form, applicants should indicate all internships they are interested in.
Up to Date Internship: Assists with the day-to-day operations of Up To Date, KCUR’s award-winning daily public affairs talk show hosted by Steve Kraske. Interns will pitch show and feature ideas, participate in production meetings, research show topics and guests, mix recorded promos and billboards, update the webspage, gather and edit audio, conduct pre-interviews and screen phone calls during the live broadcast. By the end of the term, intern will pitch and produce at least one show segment intended for broadcast on Up To Date. Strong research, writing, and organizational skills required. Basic HTML, social media and audio editing skills encouraged (we use Adobe Audition). Must work quickly, independently, well under pressure, and with constant deadlines.
News Internship: Candidates should be interested in news and current events and be prepared to offer story ideas. Duties include gathering tape for morning and afternoon newscasts and story research for reporters and editors. Must be comfortable enough with computers to pick up use of digital editing software programs (Adobe Audition) quickly. Must have excellent writing, researching and editing skills, and ability to work quickly, accurately and under deadline. Flexibility, initiative and creativity a plus. Journalism background is preferred.
Classical KC is Kansas City area’s first full-time classical music service in nearly 20 years. We seek to be an ambassador of all things classical, bringing music to and from Kansas City that is both rich and traditional as well as contemporary and inclusive. We are a non-profit and mission-driven station alongside our sister-station, KCUR 89.3, NPR in Kansas City.
The Classical KC intern will be involved in multiple aspects of station operations and programming. We seek candidates with classical music backgrounds who are interested in learning how to broadcast the message of classical music in all its forms to diverse audiences. Interns will assist with program selection and production, engage in helping Classical KC’s digital and social strategies, and help form partnerships with local musicians and classical music ensembles.
Interns will learn about public radio programming, audience development, marketing and public relations and public radio membership. Candidates should have excellent verbal, written and digital communication skills, audio editing skills (we use Adobe Audition), a passion for public radio, and a knack for connecting classical music to audiences of every level of classical knowledge.
Note: The Fall 2020 Classical KC internship deadline has been extended to August 21, 2020.
