On Thursday morning, a Lawrence judge dropped DUI charges against Kansas City Councilman Quinton Lucas due to “insufficient evidence.”
Lucas is running for mayor against councilwoman Jolie Justus.
In a statement, Lucas said he was proud that he “made the responsible choice not to drive that night.”
Lucas was arrested early in the morning on October 19th on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Lucas said at the time that he had been drinking in Lawrence that evening but fell asleep in his car after deciding not to drive back to Kansas City. Lucas' attorney had previously filed a motion to dismiss the case.
Lucas is a law lecturer at the University of Kansas.
Lucas also announced a $1000 donation to Legal Aid on Thursday. Legal Aid provides assistance to people who can’t afford to hire an attorney.
