On March 30, 2011, Google announced that it would bring its new high-speed fiberoptic network to Kansas City, Kan. Residents and businesses would be able to connect at a speed of 1 gigabit per second, 100 times faster than the average American's connection speed. In May 2011, the company announced that the service would be extended to Kansas City, Mo., as well. On July 26, 2012, Google announced that it would launch a television service along with the internet service. The announcement marked a six-week rally during which interested people can pre-register for Google's services. The next big date is Sept. 9, 2012, at which point the pre-registration period is over, and Kansas Citians who've secured the service can begin to schedule installations.

Google Fiber is scheduled to make a "special announcement" on Thursday, July 26, at 11 am CDT.

Google Inc.'s ultra-fast broadband network, Google Fiber, will serve Kansas City, Kan. and Kansas City, Mo. It's expected that details about the network's reach, video services, and more information will be revealed during Thursday's press conference, which will bestreamed live on YouTube.

TheKansas City Business Journal reports that Google Fiber has set up shop for Thursday's announcement at 1820 Westport Road near State Line, which borders Kansas and Missouri. According to the story, it's unclear if it's a temporary or permanent location:

A Google spokeswoman declined to say whether the location would serve as Google Fiber’s local headquarters or if the site merely was an announcement locale.
Chances are the location will have some longevity.
The building - and one nearby on the same corner - has been undergoing a high-end refurbish this month, according to a source close to the project.

Kansas City is known for its style of jazz, influenced by the blues, as the home of Walt Disney’s first animation studio and the headquarters of Hallmark Cards. As one of KCUR’s arts reporters, I want people here to know a wide range of arts and culture stories from across the metropolitan area. I take listeners behind the scenes and introduce them to emerging artists and organizations, as well as keep up with established institutions.
