Narcissistic Personality Disorder

Narcissism is a word that gets thrown around a lot these days. It's often a self-diagnosed condition, or people refer to others as narcissistic when they are merely being selfish.

Today on Central Standard, Host Bill Anderson talks with Dr. Bruce Liese, Professor of Family Medicine at the KU Medical Center, about the destructive behaviors that make relationships difficult. We'll also explore  arrogance, and the ways in which you can cope with a narcissist at home or at work.

Although narcissism does involve exaggerating your achievements and taking advantage of others, it should not be confused with having strong self-esteem. According to Dr. Liese, most people suffering from Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) actually have shaky self-esteem and they can easily become hurt, while also lacking empathy for others.

As with most personality disorders, NPD often develops from early childhood experiences and through interactions with our role models, although some of it is due to genetics.

If you or a loved one are suffering from the following symptoms, you or they may have NPD.

There are online resources and support groups available for sufferers, but it's always important to chat with a therapist for further treatment.

Every part of the present has been shaped by actions that took place in the past, but too often that context is left out. As a podcast producer for KCUR Studios and host of the podcast A People’s History of Kansas City, I aim to provide context, clarity, empathy and deeper, nuanced perspectives on how the events and people in the past have shaped our community today. In that role, and as an occasional announcer and reporter, I want to entertain, inform, make you think, expose something new and cultivate a deeper shared human connection about how the passage of time affects us all.
