Seg. 1: School Walkout. Seg. 2: Alvin Brooks.

Segment 1: The National School Walkout In North Kansas City.

A check-in with our reporter, who covered today's National School Walkout from Oak Park High School.

Segment 2, beginning at 5:41: A Portrait Session with Alvin Brooks.

He may be best known for founding the Ad Hoc Group Against Crime. But Alvin Brooks has also been a police officer, a city council member, mayor pro-tem and a longtime civil rights activist. And, at close to age 86, he's serving on the Hickman Mills School Board. Hear his story.

People don't make cameos in news stories; the human story is the story, with characters affected by news events, not defined by them. As a columnist and podcaster, I want to acknowledge what it feels like to live through this time in Kansas City, one vantage point at a time. Together, these weekly vignettes form a collage of daily life in Kansas City as it changes in some ways, and stubbornly resists change in others.
