Snips, Cuts And Slashes In Missouri

Higher education is on the chopping block once again in Jefferson City.

Last night during his State of the State address, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon proposed another tough budget. This one would cut spending on state universities by $90 million -- or nearly 13 percent. That, of course, comes on top of other cuts to higher education in recent years.  Medicaid is also being cut...but Gov. Nixon also proposed new ways to create jobs.

In the second half of Wednesday's Up to Date, Steve Kraske talks with State Senators Will Kraus (R, Lee's Summit) and Jolie Justus (D, Kansas City) and St. Louis Public Radio statehouse reporter Marshall Griffin about what they heard during last night's address, and legislation likely to face the Missouri General Assembly this session.

When I host Up To Date each morning at 9, my aim is to engage the community in conversations about the Kansas City area’s challenges, hopes and opportunities. I try to ask the questions that listeners want answered about the day’s most pressing issues and provide a place for residents to engage directly with newsmakers.
