Then look further than Friday's Up to Date, as independent, foreign and documentary film critics Cynthia Haines, Steve Walker and Bob Butler return to review the best films showing in area theaters.
We’ll take a look at Bully, which, following public pressure, was dropped from an R rating to PG-13. The documentary dives into the crisis of kids hurting other kids in U.S. schools.
Several films on our list feature complicated father-son relationships. In Footnote, both are professors, and when one gets special recognition their complicated relationship reaches a new peak. We’ll also discuss Being Flynn, which tells the story of Nick, a man who re-encounters his father, a con man and self-proclaimed poet.

Brothers on the Line is a documentary exploring the legacy of the Reuther brothers, pioneering labor organizers whose leadership of the United Auto Workers transformed the social, economic and political landscape of a nation. Writer, producer and director Sasha Reuther, grandson of Victor Reuther, will lead a panel discussion following a 7 p.m. screening Saturday at UMKC's Stack Auditorium, Royall Hall 111. The event is free and open to the public.
The Kansas City Women in Film and TV is hosting a special appearance by Hollywood film editor and post-producer Philip Neel. The event includes a film editing class Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a special showing of his documentary Lesson Plan 7 p.m. Friday. The seminar is $20 for members, $25 for non-members.
