KCK Mayor Mark Holland: 'We're Going To Move The Needle'

Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kan.

“We don’t have time to wait for a survey to find out what people need. We’ve already known the work, and we know what people need.” That was at-large Commissioner Mark Holland in March of 2013 at a mayoral candidate forum.

Flash forward to Mayor Mark Holland's conversation on this edition of Up to Date with host Steve Kraske where he had this to say, "We did a city-wide survey just last fall, last spring actually it came out, where we're working very hard on customer service at the UG (Unified Government)."  What a difference time in office can make.

Listing his administration's top priorities as "economic development, innovation, and healthy communities," Holland addressed steps toward realizing the Healthy Campus project, the work to bring quality grocery stores to areas in need of access to better food choices, and offering services and facilities that are accessible, but not necessarily free, to all.

As senior producer of Up To Date, I want our listeners to hear familiar and new voices that shine light on the issues and challenges facing the myriad communities KCUR serves, and to expose our audiences to the wonderful and the creative in the Kansas City area. Just as important to me is an obligation to mentor the next generation of producers to ensure that the important conversations continue. Reach me at alexanderdk@kcur.org.
When I host Up To Date each morning at 9, my aim is to engage the community in conversations about the Kansas City area’s challenges, hopes and opportunities. I try to ask the questions that listeners want answered about the day’s most pressing issues and provide a place for residents to engage directly with newsmakers.
