On April , The Village Square’s Kansas City group hosted a panel discussion on "American Justice: The Impact of Incarceration." An expert panel examined imprisonment as the most effective form of achieving public safety, the racial disparities that exist in our prison system, and the alternatives to solving these issues. Former U.S. Ambassador Alan Katz moderated the conversation.

- Joan Blades is founding partner of Living Room Conversations and co-founder of MomsRising.org and MoveOn.org.
- Nazgol Ghandnoosh, Ph.D., is a research analyst at the Sentencing Project. She focuses on racial disparities in incarceration and trends in public opinion about punishment and sentencing policies.
- Michael Gilbert, Ph.D., is executive director of the National Association of Community and Restorative Justice and professor at the University of Texas-San Antonio.
- Eric Smith is a supervisory special agent with the DEA.
