In 2013, Bishop Robert Finn, of the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, was found guilty of failing to report suspected abuse of children by Father Shawn Ratigan. The bishop resigned in 2015.

Segment 1: Local reactions to Pennsylvania grand jury report on seven decades of sexual abuse of children by clergy.

"Dismay, despair," is how one observer describes what Catholics are feeling at the news that more than 300 priests abused 1,000 children in Pennsylvania. KCUR listeners and representatives from Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, the National Catholic Reporter, and the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph spoke about what has been done locally, what still needs to be done, and how the Church can restore trust with the faithful.

Segment 2, beginning at 31:46: Author and social activist says it's possible "to communicate with people you disagree with."

Every day, the world seems to get more polarized. Even your own family may hold views that seem bizarre. For those wanting to change their minds, but who have no idea how to get through to them, writer Justin Lee offered suggestions for ways to engage. He says opening a dialogue with those who may be your polar opposite may change their views, or even your own.

When I host Up To Date each morning at 9, my aim is to engage the community in conversations about the Kansas City area’s challenges, hopes and opportunities. I try to ask the questions that listeners want answered about the day’s most pressing issues and provide a place for residents to engage directly with newsmakers. Reach me at steve@kcur.org or on Twitter @stevekraske.
As senior producer of Up To Date, I want our listeners to hear familiar and new voices that shine light on the issues and challenges facing the myriad communities KCUR serves, and to expose our audiences to the wonderful and the creative in the Kansas City area. Just as important to me is an obligation to mentor the next generation of producers to ensure that the important conversations continue. Reach me at alexanderdk@kcur.org.
