Seg. 1: Legacy of Sly James | Seg. 2: Abandoned Homes Solution

Segment 1: Former mayor of Kansas City, Missouri, can be remembered for more than brick-and-mortar accomplishments

With his successor officially sworn in as mayor, Sly James has ended his eight years  at City Hall. His legacy goes beyond a convention hotel, a single-terminal airport and the streetcar. A panel of non-profit representatives spotlighted James' fights for a higher minimum wage, women's equality and literacy in young children.

Segment 2, beginning at 21:00: Website aims to reduce number of deserted homes in Kansas City

Two UMKC professors who created an initiative called Abandoned to Vibrant described how a website can help with urban blight. They explained how providing potential buyers with more data on available abandoned homes and their surrounding neighborhoods can better match investors' funds to the right house.

  • Jim DeLisle, director of Academic Real Estate Programs and associate professor of Real Estate at UMKC
  • Brent Never, associate professor, Public Affairs at UMKC
When I host Up To Date each morning at 9, my aim is to engage the community in conversations about the Kansas City area’s challenges, hopes and opportunities. I try to ask the questions that listeners want answered about the day’s most pressing issues and provide a place for residents to engage directly with newsmakers.
