Kansas Rep.-elect Rui Xu, left, and Missouri Rep.-elect Matt Sain are both preparing to make the transition from ordinary citizen to state lawmaker.

Segment 1: How newly-elected lawmakers get up to speed before taking office.

There's new staff to meet, colleagues to greet, committee assignments, and dorms to move into — well, that last one might not apply, but becoming a new state lawmaker can be a lot like going off to college. We spoke with two freshman lawmakers from the Kansas City area about making the transition to the statehouse.

  • Missouri Rep.-elect Matt Sain, D-Kansas City
  • Kansas Rep.-elect Rui Xu, D-Westwood

Segment 2, beginning at 24:25: A short but intense friendship lives on through letters.

One of the first things that intrigued Sarah Ruhl about Max Ritvo was that he was a poet and a comedian. "Poets who are funny are a rare and amazing species of human being," she says. Illness took Ritvo's life as his creative output peaked, but not before he and Ruhl decided to create a book from their years of correspondence. Today, she spoke about the special bond they created.
