Bollywood Singer Performs in KC

India's massive film industry, known as Bollywood, has become known around the world for its elaborate movie musicals. Characters in your typical Bollywood film might burst into song at any time or place, thanks to the old trick of lip-synching to pre-recorded music. In India, it's not just the film actors who become famous, but the singers, known as playback singers, who perform the songs. By Alex Smith

Kansas City, MO – On Wednesday (July 4, 2007), the Bengali cultural organization Sangam-Midwest will host playback singer Shreya for a concert at UMKC. KCUR's Alex Smith spoke with Sangam-Midwest's vice president Ashim Mitra and his wife Rangana Mitra about Bollywood musicals and some of the more serious themes in Indian films.
