Kansas City, MO – Lewis Diuguid's columns have been a mainstay in the Kansas City Star for more than twenty years. He often explores race, diversity and community issues. But feedback from readers, and it wasn't all positive, inspired him to go beyond the limitations of his weekly column and write a book.

Discovering the Real America: Toward a More Perfect Union examines discrimination and racism in the United States. Diuguid teamed up with Elsje Smith, a high school teacher who invited him to her class. Smith worked with him on his first book, A Teacher's Cry: Expose the Truth About Education Today, served as editor of the new book and wrote the forward. Lewis Diuguid and Elsja Smith stopped by our studios recently and spoke with KCUR's Ty Chandler.
