Phase II streetcar expansion corridor defined

The city council approved further study of three extension routes for the downtown streetcar system.

The proposed extensions are two eastward branches (Independence Avenue and in the 31st Street-Linwood corridor) and a south extension as far as Waldo. Consultants hope for 50 percent federal funding.

Corinthian Hall KC Museum, collection could change hands

The council also began to consider a plan to take over management of the Kansas City Museum, separating it from Union Station. The proposed arrangement, which has not been through a committee hearing yet, calls for the city to rent some museum space from the station.

Turf battle stymies progress on Missouri Medicaid expansion

Missouri Republican legislative leaders tentatively agreed to a meeting with Gov.Jay Nixon on whether to expand Medicaid, but insisted that the meeting be a hearing and be held in the Capitol. Democrat Nixon balked at the format and turf. No meeting has been scheduled.

Missouri to comply with Obama request not to cancel health policies

Meanwhile, the governor announced that Missouri will honor President Obama's request to allow some initially banned insurance policies to still be sold. Missouri insurance director John Huff said no Missouri law would prohibit cooperation.

Praeger declines invitation to White House meeting on ACA problems

Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger turned down an invitation to participate in a White House discussion of problems with the Affordable Care Act. She said she still supports implementation of the law, but does not believe that the insurance industry has a unified position on the rollout problems yet.

Former Jackson County court administrator pleads guilty to embezzlement

Teresa York, former administrator of the Jackson County Circuit Court, pleaded guilty to embezzling from the government. In total she was accused of stealing $140,000.

Executions resume in Missouri

Missouri carried out its first execution in nearly three years. Convicted racist killer Joseph Paul Franklin died by lethal injection at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday.

KCK government to buy ballpark in return for T-Bones commitment

The Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kan., announced plans to buy and renovate the Community America ballpark, where the T-Bones play. In return the county/city is asking for a long-term lease commitment.

Sporting Kansas City hoping to win soccer league championship

Sporting Kansas City, one game away from the championship match, prepared to play the Houston Dynamos Saturday in the Eastern Conference final. Houston derailed Kansas City's championship drive last year.
