KANSAS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL:
The 12th annual Kansas International Film Festival takes place October 5 – 11 at the Glenwood Arts Theatre, 95th and Metcalf in Overland Park. Named one of the top 25 festivals worth the entry fee by Movie Maker Magazine, KIFF features documentaries, narrative and animated independent films, as well as compilations of shorts.
KIFF attracts local, regional and national works. Every 3rd Thursday of every month at 7:30pm, the Glenwood Arts features the KIFF EXTRA, a special screening promoting independent films in KC. More information is available at kansasfilm.com.
FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS:
- “The Invisible War,” a documentary about the epidemic rape of soldiers in the US military. It won the audience award at Sundance.
- “Kansas City Jazz & Blues: Past, Present and Future”
- “Butter,” a comic drama with Jennifer Garner and Hugh Jackman about a young girl with an uncanny ability at butter carving.
MOVIES THAT MATTER:
Robert Butler continues his film series, “Movies that Matter, 20 films essential to cinema literacy.” From now, through May 19th, see the series at 1:30pm on Sundays at the Plaza Branch of the KCMO public library.
This Sunday is Buster Keaton’s 1926 classic, “The General.” Upcoming titles include Igmar Bergman’s “The Seventh Seal,” Akira Kurowsawa’s “Rashomon,” and many other great Hollywood and foreign entries. For the exact schedule, go to kclibrary.org.
MAVERICKS OF AMERICAN DANCE:
The Tivoli Performing Arts Series continues with a co-presentation with the KC Ballet, “Joffrey: Mavericks of American Dance.” Introduced by William Whitner, artistic director of the KC Ballet, the Hi-Def broadcast will be September 20th at 6:30pm. More information is available at tivolikc.com.
