Charlotte Street's Julie Dalgleish On Bringing New 'Energy and Passion'

Her three-decade career working with arts and cultural organizations has taken her to cities across the country, and into Canada. But, for most of her adult life, Julie Dalgleish has been based in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area - until now.

Dalgleish moved to Kansas City in August, as the new executive director of the Charlotte Street Foundation, a nonprofit founded in 1997 by David Hughes – it provides fellowships, residencies, studios, and exhibitions for Kansas City artists. She talked about what encouraged her to make the move.

"There's a word that has been used a lot, so I feel like it's been overused, but I'm going to use it anyway: (there's) a level of authenticity, a sense of being genuine," says Dalgleish, when asked to describe the organization. "These are really committed folks who are very genuine to who they are as an organization and to this place."

Founder David Hughes has transitioned to director emeritus, and will also serve on Charlotte Street's finance committee. Kate Hackman takes on the newly created role of artistic director. Dalgleish says Hackman, as artistic director, will take the lead on programming, but it will be a partnership.

Programming, according to Dalgleish, should emerge from observations and intentional community conversations.  "I don't come here with an agenda, a bag of tricks and a bunch of programs that I want to see introduced," she says. "This organization has been very good about listening to its community and responding, building programming, and I want to continue that path."

Kansas City is known for its style of jazz, influenced by the blues, as the home of Walt Disney’s first animation studio and the headquarters of Hallmark Cards. As one of KCUR’s arts reporters, I want people here to know a wide range of arts and culture stories from across the metropolitan area. I take listeners behind the scenes and introduce them to emerging artists and organizations, as well as keep up with established institutions.
