KCUR's Band Of The Week: The Sextet

Courtesy The Sextet
The Sextet releases its second album on October 7.

The Sextetis a jazz group led by bassist Robert Castillo, with saxophonist Max Levy, trumpeter Teddy Krulewich, trombonist Trevor Turla, guitarist Peter Marten and drummer Fritz Hutchison. Their penchant for soulful grooves and elements of funk will appeal to fans of like-minded Kansas City jazz groups like the Project H and Eddie Moore and the Outer Circle.

The band celebrates the release of their second album, "Blob Castle," on Saturday. Filled with youthful exuberance, a track like “Square Peg in a Round Hole” exemplifies the Sextet’s exciting balance between honoring jazz convention and succumbing to wild abandon:

The Sextet, 9 p.m. Saturday, October 7, at the Black Dolphin, just a few steps south of the Green Lady Lounge, 1813 Grand Boulevard, Kansas City, Missouri, 64108; 816-215-2954.
