Smallcakes Founder: New Gelato Concept Will Be Just As Big

Kansas City will be the first to get a taste of Jeff Martin's latest concept, Southern Charm Gelato, which is opening later this month on the Country Club Plaza.

Kansas City will be the first to get a taste of a new concept from Smallcakes founder Jeff Martin: Southern Charm Gelato.

A trip to Italy less than two years ago inspired the idea, the founder of Overland Park-based franchising company Sweet Brands told the Kansas City Business Journal. Martin fell in love with the presentation — the peaks of gelato artfully drizzled with a variety of flavors and fruits and the servers decked out in jackets and ties.

Southern Charm Gelato also will feature a similar charm, with employees wearing plaid shirts accented with ties or bow ties.

"We are keeping it very Southern, meaning we have a lot of wood when you walk in. It's very charming. We want you to feel comfortable," he said.

Unlike a number of gelato shops in the U.S., Southern Charm won't be relying on Italian-driven flavors or unfamiliar terminology. There's an American twist, and it's a concept that's relatable to everyday people, he said.
