Emergency responders say that is was probably a tornado that ripped through the tiny town of Harveyville, Kansas last night.
The town of less than 250 residents in Wabaunsee County was the community hit hardest by last night's widespread storms, which left 40 percent of Harveyville's buildings damaged or destroyed. At least a dozen of the town's residents were injured, one of them critically.
Sharon Watson with the Kansas Adjutant Generals Department is on the ground in Harveyville. She says the storm damaged homes, an apartment building and a church.
"Very large trees are flat on the ground, buildings completely torn up, some totally destroyed and some with roofs off," she said. "So quite a variety of damage here."
Watson says they've wrapped up search and rescue efforts. Emergency responders are now trying to determine how many of the town's residents have been left homeless and in need of help.
