Officials in Kansas City, Mo., may be clamoring to host the 2016 Republican National Convention.
But social media buzz in Kansas City wasn’t always as welcoming, according to feedback we received this week in KCUR’s informal polls.
On Wednesday, convention selection committee members began their site visit in Kansas City, one of the four finalists competing to host the convention.
We wanted to know how Kansas Citians thought Kansas City stood apart from competitor cities Cleveland, Dallas and Denver.
So, we asked our audience to fill in the blank: Dear GOP, pick Kansas City because ____________.
Some people pointed to Kansas City’s many attributes, including the food scene.
“KC is in the middle of a food renaissance,” Brandon O’Dell tells us on Facebook.
In an email, Andrea Allen highlighted some of Kansas City’s architecture.
“Pick Kansas City because you may never have another opportunity to see one of the most beautiful libraries in the world … the Central Library at 14 W. 10th St. in Kansas City, Mo.,” Allen says.
Some were more direct in why they wanted Kansas City to host the convention.
“Dear GOP, please pick Kansas City because we want your money,” Nathan Staley (@n8daily) tells us on Twitter.
Others opposed the possibility of Kansas City hosting the convention at all.
“This question should be, ‘Please DON'T pick Kansas City because ...’” Jason Zimmerman tells us on Facebook.
Steve Alleman ended the sentence with: “… because we need a good laugh.”
On Facebook, Lezlee Bryan added, “Please GOP, go away.”
