Airlines that use KCI are not convinced a complete terminal replacement would help their business.
Airline officers took their turn appearing before the advisory group on the airport’s future.
The advisory group appointed by the Mayor is exploring whether to recommend a new terminal layout or renovate what’s there.
Southwest Airlines executive Ron Ricks spoke for all major carriers at the airport and said the current system operates well.
To Ricks, airport style doesn’t attract passengers. He added, the trend is toward planes no larger than now but more fuel efficient.
“In terms of terminal design, in terms of your airport, we don’t see in our crystal ball that there will be material changes in the size or type of aircraft,” he said.
Ricks said Southwest, KCI’s busiest carrier, is doing well with the current KCI and will do well five or ten years into the future. He cited potential for better restrooms and concessions.
The advisory group still plans to have a recommendation in April for the Mayor, City Council and Aviation Department to consider.
