The health system formerly known as Shawnee Mission Health is expanding its presence in Johnson County, saying it will break ground in the fall on an 85-bed hospital in south Overland Park, Kansas.
AdventHealth, as it rebranded itself earlier this month, also plans to open an outpatient health facility later this year at the corner of College Boulevard and Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park and a medical office building in Merriam, Kansas.
The new 193,000-square-foot hospital will be located at 165th Street and Antioch Road and will include a birth center, surgical services, an intensive care unit and cardiac care services, according to a news release. AdventHealth said it expects the hospital to generate the equivalent of 200 full-time jobs.
AdventHealth, which is headquartered in Florida and affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church, comprises 49 hospitals in nine states, including Shawnee Mission Medical Center at 75th Street and Interstate 35 in Merriam.
The hospital will expand a smaller facility that AdventHealth opened at the same location in the BluHawk development in 2017. The facility includes a free-standing emergency department, lab and radiology services and a variety of physician specialties.
“We identified quite a few years ago when we purchased the land out there that south Johnson County would be expanding,” said Robin Harrold, vice president of ambulatory network at AdventHealth. “We have a very strong hospital right here at 75th and I-35, but we know that people like health care closer to home and we felt a need to expand in that area.
“So this will help expand our mission, which is extending the healing ministry of Christ in that south Johnson County area.”
The new hospital will be the latest in a spate of hospital expansions in Johnson County, the state’s richest county. Recent examples include The University of Kansas Health System tripling the size of its hospital at 107th Street and Nall Avenue at a cost of $100 million; and Olathe Medical Center completing a new 25,000-square-foot cancer center, also for $100 million, at its Olathe campus.
