Independence And Jackson County Launch Ambitious Plans To Support Artists

Englewood Arts with permission
Among the plans for the Englewood Arts District is studio space including one for blown glass.

An arts district is emerging in Independence, and Jackson County is looking to develop a strategic arts and culture plan for the entire county.

A dramatic new hub for Kansas City-area artists is taking shape on Winner Road in Independence.

Plans for the Englewood Arts District include long-term housing for artists meant to shelter them from the gentrification that drove them from other neighborhoods in the metro.

Meanwhile, Jackson County has asked ArtsKC to lead its project for a county-wide plan.

A major goal is to "support art in all its forms throughout the county" while ensuring diversity in who participates in the arts and who has access to the arts.
