Seg. 1: Race Project KC | Seg. 2: Preserving Missouri's Prairies

Segment 1: Race Project KC is educating high school students on structural racism in Kansas City.

Built off of Tanner Colby's book "Some of My Best Friends Are Black," Johnson County Library takes students on a bus tour to provide lessons on the ways that segregration is ingrained in the foundation of the city. Shawnee Mission East student Oliver Henry said the tour helped her better understand the lack of diversity at her school.

Segment 2, beginning at 29:58: Missouri Prairie Foundation is working to preserve what remains of the state's original 15 million acres of grassland.

Much of Missouri's prairies have been plowed under to make way for communities, roads and agriculture. One organization is working to preserve the approximately 60,000 remaining acres and to educate the public on the vital role the grasslands play in our ecosystem.

When I host Up To Date each morning at 9, my aim is to engage the community in conversations about the Kansas City area’s challenges, hopes and opportunities. I try to ask the questions that listeners want answered about the day’s most pressing issues and provide a place for residents to engage directly with newsmakers.
