The KCMO City Council is days away from voting on the proposal to build a $302 million Hyatt hotel downtown. On this edition of Up to Date, Steve Kraske looks at the pros and cons of building for the convention business.

Guest:

  • Heywood Sanders is a professor of public administration at the University of Texas at San Antonio with a doctorate in government from Harvard. He is the author of Convention Center Follies: Politics, Power, and Public Investment in American Cities.
  • Rick Hughes is a faculty member for Destination Marketing Association International and founder of Strategic Data Resources. He is the former CEO of the Kansas City Convention and Visitors Association.

Heywood Sanders will speak at the Central branch of the Kansas City Public Library Wednesday, July 22 at 6:30 p.m. For more information, visit kclibrary.org.

When I host Up To Date each morning at 9, my aim is to engage the community in conversations about the Kansas City area’s challenges, hopes and opportunities. I try to ask the questions that listeners want answered about the day’s most pressing issues and provide a place for residents to engage directly with newsmakers.
