Seg. 1: Johnson County Primaries | Seg. 2: Jay McShann's Legacy

Segment 1: Normally obscure ballots in Kansas county drawing greater attention

Without a high-profile race for governor or Congress, the Johnson County, Kansas, primary elections are usually on the sleepy side. Not so this time around as controversies have made even the community college's open seats on its Board of Trustee highly-contested.

Segment 2, beginning at 22:58: New live album released of jazz legend who died in 2006

"Jay McShann Live in Tokyo 1990" was released in March after the recording sat on a producer's shelf for nearly three decades. McShann's daughter Jayne and music reviewer Bill Brownlee explained how that live performance finally was made available to the public and talked about the jazz pianist's legacy today.

  • Bill Brownlee, KCUR contributor and curator of Plastic Sax
When I host Up To Date each morning at 9, my aim is to engage the community in conversations about the Kansas City area’s challenges, hopes and opportunities. I try to ask the questions that listeners want answered about the day’s most pressing issues and provide a place for residents to engage directly with newsmakers.
