A coroner's report found that 50-year-old Charles Adair died by "mechanical asphyxia" at the Wyandotte County Detention Center after a deputy kneeled on his back and restrained him. A similar tactic caused the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

The death of Charles Adair, 50, which has been ruled a homicide, was due to a common police procedure called prone restraint. "This is in the hands of the law officers," a medical expert said.

Officer Hunter Simoncic, 26, is the second line-of-duty death in Wyandotte County in a month. A 31-year-old suspect was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder, vehicular homicide and other allegations, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Law enforcement officials said the killing of Elijah Ming, 34, was another example in the spate of domestic violence calls and shootings this summer. If convicted, Shawn Harris, 38, faces a life sentence or the death penalty.

The Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department, fire department and Wyandotte County Sheriff all saw millions of dollars in cuts. The Unified Government had a $12 million budget hole after voting unanimously to freeze property taxes in June.

Terra Morehead, who retired as a federal prosecutor last August, has agreed to turn over her law license as part of an agreement with a Kansas disciplinary board. As a Wyandotte County prosecutor in the 1990s, Morehead helped KCKPD Detective Roger Golubski frame an innocent man who spent 23 years in prison.

Lionel A. Womack, a former Kansas City, Kansas, Police detective, was shot and killed by a current officer Monday afternoon. Womack, 36, was fired last year for "numerous" policy and conduct violations.
