Over the Mother’s Day weekend, a youth baseball and softball tournament was held in the St. Louis area. Some summer leagues in the Kansas City area are in the works.

Segment 1, beginning at 4:20: In the midst of a global pandemic, parties at Lake of the Ozarks made international news.

A sociologist explores the considerations behind why large of groups of revelers would choose to gather during the Memorial Day weekend without social distancing.

Segment 2, beginning at 33:30: How area sports officials are handling summer sports

With a global pandemic disrupting public events and outings, area rec sports directors discuss how the nature of leagues, particularly for youths, will have to change.

When I host Up To Date each morning at 9, my aim is to engage the community in conversations about the Kansas City area’s challenges, hopes and opportunities. I try to ask the questions that listeners want answered about the day’s most pressing issues and provide a place for residents to engage directly with newsmakers. Reach me at steve@kcur.org or on Twitter @stevekraske.
