Mayor Quinton Lucas | Greek Life Reform

Luke X. Martin

KCUR 89.3
Mayor Lucas was able to reach a handshake agreement with the homeless camped outside of City Hall to ensure up to 500 receive temporary housing .

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas addresses the challenges facing the city and Greek life on college campuses is seeing a downturn.

Segment 1, beginning at 1:04: Mayor Quinton Lucas addresses the homeless crisis in Kansas City.

Part of the solution means providing temporary housing for up to 500 homeless people in what Lucas recognized as "how important de-escalation can be". The mayor also discusses the renaming of three streets for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., electric buses being added to the city's fleet, and paid internships for at-risk youth.

Segment 2, beginning at 27:45: Greek life has been a cornerstone of college culture for decades in spite of high-profile sexual assaults, alcohol abuse and hazing deaths.

Considering the array of issues surrounding Greek life, is 2021 the year for its reform or is it time to dismantle it altogether? That's the conversation students around the nation are having. At Washington University in St. Louis, nearly half of students belonging to sororities and fraternities have canceled their memberships, while at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, a movement to reform the system is under way.
