Burns & McDonnell Begins $42 Million Kansas City Headquarters Expansion, Will Hire 1,200

Burns and McDonnell
The second phase of Burns and McDonnell's world headquarters expansion will add a four-story, 142,000-square-foot building and a 550-space parking garage on Ward Parkway.

Saying it will hire around 1,200 employees this year, Burns & McDonnell announced that it is beginning work on a $42 million expansion of its Kansas City headquarters campus, the Kansas City Business Journal reports.

What's actually the second phase of the firm's headquarters expansion will bring the addition of a four-story, 142,000-square-foot building and a 550-space parking garage. The new building will tie in to the company's 9450 Ward Parkway building, which opened in 2016.

CEO Ray Kowalik said that what's being called 9450 South is to be finished in the summer of 2020. Like the existing 9450 building, the expansion is being designed and developed by Burns & McDonnell in partnership with VanTrust Real Estate LLC.

Kowalik told the Kansas City Business Journal that Burns & McDonnell has hustled to keep up with plans to build out its Kansas City campus. The original plans called for three wings of new office construction, but hiring pushed the firm to combine the first two phases. Firm leaders thought they'd be starting on what will be 9450 South a year or two from now.

"Now, we're building as fast as we can," Kowalik said.
