KANSAS CITY, MO – The story that most impacted the rest of the year's news coverage in Kansas City was the spring's mayoral showdown between then City Auditor Mark Funkhouser, who crusaded against tax breaks for downtown developers, and city councilman and longtime crime fighter, Alvin Brooks. We thought we'd listen back to a bit of Walt Bodine and Maria Carter's interview with Mark Funkhouser before the election.
A few months after that election, which Funkhouser won by about 800 votes, Ty Chandler caught up with Alvin Brooks. He talked about his plans to revive the ad hoc group against crime, and how he dealt with tragedy very close to home.
