A member of the Kansas House is accused of trying to secretly record a conversation with another legislator.
Senator Vicki Schmidt, a Topeka Republican, was in her office meeting with Representative TerriLois Gregory, a Republican from Baldwin City. The two were discussing Medicaid policy. Schmidt says she noticed the recording device in Gregory’s purse.
Schmidt says she was shocked by the incident.
"I had never heard of someone recording someone else inside of our own private offices," Schmidt says. "I think it's difficult enough to get things done around here without fear of being recorded in your office."
In a statement, Representative Gregory said she did not mean to offend Senator Schmidt, and she was trying make sure she had all the facts straight. It appears no laws were broken, but legislative leaders say the covert recording was inappropriate.
