On-demand, point-to-point rides are being offered in Kansas City and St. Louis as a way around fixed bus routes and schedules. In rural communities, microtransit is often touted as a tool to get people to work and essential appointments. But reviews of the programs are so far mixed.

Wienermobile driver Mary Clare "Chili Cheese MC" Kammer, just like the Oscar Mayer hot dogs themselves, hails from Missouri. She and her fellow driver Sam "Hammy Sammy" Dlott rolled through the Kansas City metro this week handing out whistles, stickers and postcards to frankfurter fans.

The KCATA says Kansas City, Missouri, residents will no longer subsidize the costs to run buses through the surrounding suburbs. That's meant a dramatic increase in costs to individual cities — pushing many municipalities like Gladstone and Liberty to cancel their bus service entirely.

The city’s new on-demand transit service, IRIS, will now serve riders across the entire metro — with the intention of filling in the gaps of existing bus routes. The expansion is happening at the same time that KCATA hikes the cost of providing bus service to surrounding municipalities, causing concerns about accessibility.

With rules varying from city to city, metro leaders fear the confusion around reopening will result in a lack of compliance.
