As he runs for re-election this November, Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley’s about-face on right to work is seen by some as a welcome shift toward pro-labor policy and by others as election year pandering.

Lucas Kunce is squaring off against GOP U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley in a race that’s gotten increasingly combative in recent weeks.

The two major party candidates, along with third party contenders for U.S. Senate, met for the first time on stage at the debate sponsored by the Missouri Press Association.

Missouri doesn’t have a particularly robust history of supporting third party or independent candidates. Jared Young, a member of the newly-formed Better Party, hopes to change that in the U.S. Senate race.

The majority of itemized donations to Kunce and Hawley come from outside the state, making up more than half of the total each has raised.

The race between Josh Hawley and Lucas Kunce will take place at the same time as a measure to legalize abortion — which could boost Democratic turnout compared to the last two presidential elections.

In a campaign event in Ozark, Missouri, the Republican senator warned of "danger and disaster" coming from the border and pledged to ban transgender athletes from women's sports.

Kunce, an attorney and a U.S. Marine veteran from the Kansas City area, now begins an uphill battle to unseat GOP Sen. Josh Hawley in November.
