A private prison in Leavenworth, Kansas, could reopen to hold detainees for federal immigration authorities. Plus: Farmers fear the trade war could cause another farm crisis.

The Trump administration’s promised deportations have private prison operator CoreCivic moving to use the inactive Kansas facility to house federal detainees. Some former employees and immigrant rights advocates are pushing back.

CoreCivic, through its Leavenworth prison, wants to hold up to 1,000 detained immigrants. The United States does not have enough prison cells to meet mass deportation promise.

Public defenders and the ACLU sent a joint letter to the Biden administration declaring that the facility, privately owned by CoreCivic, is not meeting inmates' basic needs.

The group detailed "stabbings, suicides and even homicide" at the CoreCivic facility in Leavenworth.
