The Coterie

Tanner Rose plays the eccentric chocolate maker Willy Wonka in The Coterie Theater production of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," which runs through Aug. 4. When he's not playing the world's most famous chocolatier, Rose himself works at a Kansas City chocolate shop.

Khalia Davis started as The Coterie's new producing artistic director on Feb. 1. Before landing in Kansas City, Davis helped lead the Bay Area Children’s Theatre in Oakland, California. Her appointment comes a year after her predecessor died by suicide amidst accusations of sexual abuse.

To start the Halloween season, The Coterie Theater is bringing Gothic horror performances back to Union Cemetery, the state’s oldest public graveyard and the final resting place of many Kansas City founders.

The report, commissioned by the theater, said there were no allegations of attacks on children.

Accusations that Jeff Church sexually assaulted multiple young men began circulating last week. On Saturday, he resigned from the prominent children’s theater. And on Monday, police confirmed his death.

Joette Pelster had led the youth theater since 1993. She passed away on Nov. 25, just a week after announcing plans to retire.
